Coastal Breeze
This piece was written for a University assignment in 2023 where we had to arrange a piano piece for a small orchestra. By using elements from the original piece and my own arranging skills and knowledge I came up with this piece called ‘Coastal Breeze’. It reflects that lovely fresh breeze on the coast that you feel when your relaxing on the beach or looking out and admiring the view.
The piece begins with a simple Cello arpeggio which continues through the whole piece, like the waves of the ocean rolling in one at a time. Then the woodwinds introduce the melody which is fragmented between them, like the wind tossing about the leaves and sand in the air. The piece becomes thicker and the texture grows just like the wind picking up more speed and blowing the waves, creating more movement. I made sure to have all the instruments interact with each other in some way rather than just one section or one part playing the melody all the time.
After an exciting and energetic section in the middle, most of the instruments fade away and leaving the french horn and cello by themselves which reflects the wind and waves calming down once again. The piece finishes with a lush and restful ending where the ocean goes to sleep as the sun starts to set.
